ITR filings hit a record this year, with 7.85 crore returns filed till October 31

A record number of Income Tax Returns (ITR) have been filed this year i.e. 2023. According to data from the Income Tax Department, a total of 7.85 crore returns have been filed in the financial year 2023-24 till October 31.

The tax department appreciated the taxpayers and tax professionals for timely compliance. The Income Tax department said on November 1, ‘A total of 7.65 crore returns were filed till October 31 for the assessment year 2023-24, while 6.85 crore returns were filed till November 7, 2022 for the previous year i.e. assessment year 2022-23.’

Income Tax Department has also made considerable progress in ITR verification and processing. According to the Income Tax Department, out of the total returns filed so far, 7.51 crore returns have already been verified. Also, out of 7.51 crore verified returns, 7.19 crore returns have been processed by October 31, 2023, i.e. 96% verified ITRs have been processed.

It is worth noting that August 31 was the last date for filing statutory forms like Form 10B, 10BB and Form 3CEB. Over 1.44 crore forms have been filled till October 31 this year. The Income Tax Department also said that no technical issues were encountered in its e-portal even during the last date for submission of returns and other forms.

“Taxpayers were assisted through inbound calls, outbound calls, live chat, webex and co-browsing sessions,” an Income Tax department statement said. The helpdesk team also responded to queries raised on the tax department’s Twitter handle. Tax related information videos were also uploaded on the e-filing portal.
